Alex Ovechkin scores 845th career goal, tallies twice against Leafs

The Washington Capitals got blown out by the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-3 on Wednesday, but Alex Ovechkin had himself a night.

After scoring career goal number 844 in the second period, Ovechkin followed that up with number 845 in the third, notching consecutive multi-goal games and the 171st of his career.

Ovechkin scored while on a two-on-one break with Dylan Strome.

Strome, with the determination of Evgeny Kuznetsov on Ovi’s 802nd career goal, held onto the puck and waited until Leafs’ defenseman Jake McCabe slid out of the way to pass to the Capitals captain at the bottom of the left circle. Ovechkin then gathered himself and fired shot side feating goaltender Joseph Woll for the third time in his career.

The goal closed Ovechkin to within 49 of Wayne Gretzky for a share of the NHL’s all-time goals record of 894.

Ovi has goals in three consecutive games and has five in that span.
