ANSWERS TO THE MCQs

1. (a)

FYI:

— The Chinese people have started occupying several of the country’s model ‘Xiaokang’ border defence villages, along its border with India’s northeastern region.

— For more than five years, China has been building 628 such Xiaokang or “well-off villages” along India’s borders with the Tibet Autonomous Region. These have been built all along the LAC, including the Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh borders.

— The Indian government announced the Vibrant Villages Programme in 2022 to develop its border villages into modern villages with all amenities and as tourist attractions. The programme builds on the existing Border Area Development Programme (BADP) under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

— India intends to transform 663 border villages into modern villages as part of the program’s first phase. At least 17 such border villages along China’s borders in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh have been selected for development as a pilot project.

— Zemithang, Taksing, Chayang Tajo, Tuting, and Kibithu are villages in Arunachal Pradesh’s east and Tawang region.

Therefore, option (a) is the correct answer.

2. (c)

FYI:

— The European Commission published an impact assessment recommending that the European Union cut 90 per cent of its net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, compared to 1990 levels.

— The new target is part of the European Union’s push to become the first continent to be carbon-neutral by 2050.

— The target is for “net greenhouse gas emissions,” which will subtract the amount that the union removes from the air using methods like carbon capture.

— To attain the ambitious 90% target, the European Union will need to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030.

— According to the commission, Europe’s energy sector will achieve full decarbonisation shortly after 2040. This will include a variety of low-carbon energy alternatives such as renewable energy, nuclear energy, increased energy efficiency, improved storage, CCS (carbon capture and storage), CCU (carbon capture and utilisation), geothermal, and hydroelectric power.

Therefore, option (c) is the correct answer.

3. (d)

FYI:

— Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-sex civil marriage, despite opposition from the influential, socially conservative Greek Church.

— A cross-party majority of 176 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament voted in favor of the landmark bill drafted by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ‘ center-right government.

— This is a milestone for human rights, reflecting today’s Greece — a progressive, and democratic country, passionately committed to European values.

Therefore, option (d) is the correct answer.

4. (a)

FYI:

Therefore, option (a) is the correct answer.

5. (a)

FYI:

— The African Union (AU) was approved as a new member of the G20 less than three months after India proposed the inclusion of the group. This occurred at the ongoing 18th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit in New Delhi. Hence, statement 2 is not correct.

— The AU is an intergovernmental organisation of the 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. Hence, statement 1 is correct.

— It was launched on July 9, 2002, the grouping is the successor of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was formed in 1963 (more on this later).

— The AU’s secretariat, the African Union Commission, is based in Addis Ababa. Collectively the group has a gross domestic product (gdp) of $3 trillion with some 1.4 billion people. Hence, statement 3 is not correct.

— The AU’s predecessor, OAU, was also an intergovernmental organisation and it aimed to bring African nations together and resolve common issues through collective action.

— Its primary goal, however, was to aid in the liberation of the continent’s colonial countries. To that end, the OAU rallied diplomatic support and gave logistical assistance to liberation movements across Africa.

Therefore, option (a) is the correct answer.
