Charlotte woman charged with insurance fraud, commissioner says
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A Charlotte woman has been charged with one count of insurance fraud, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said Thursday.
Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Laverne Love Johnson Peebles, 36, of submitting a fraudulent claim to Sentry Insurance Company stating that she was driving her Toyota Sequoia SUV with a passenger when the car was involved in a crash. In fact, Peebles was not in the car during the May 29, 2023, crash.
Peebles has been summoned to appear in a Mecklenburg County courtroom on February 29 to answer for this charge.
“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”
If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, you can anonymously report it by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
