ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – As the chill of winter begins to soften and warm weather beckons, Rocky River is gearing up for an event again that has become a happy indication of spring: The Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show.
The show is scheduled for March 9 and 10 at the Rocky River Memorial Hall, not only suggesting the return of longer days and greener landscapes but also is celebrating the creativity and spirit of local artisans and crafters.
The Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show is more than just a market; it’s a gathering that brings together the community in appreciation of handmade, original creations ranging from textiles, jewelry and woodwork to home decor, clothing and more—all unique, one-of-a-kind ensuring attendees can find items that embody the heart and soul of their creators.
But the show does more than just showcase local talent too; it also gives back to the community in a meaningful way.
A portion of the proceeds from the event is donated to a local charity and this year’s beneficiary is Wigs for Kids. Founded by Jeffrey Paul, Wigs for Kids is a compassionate organization that brings stylists and hair donors together to create wigs for children dealing with medical issues, helping to lift their spirits and self-esteem.
The cause ensures that, in addition to supporting local artists, attendees of the show are also contributing to a project that makes a significant difference in the lives of children and their families, all at no cost to them.
“The Avant-Garde shows are an eclectic selection of some of the area’s unique and talented artisans and crafters, screened for acceptance in order to participate, so you really are going to get a great selection of items to shop,” said Becki Silverstein, originator of the show.
“We have been doing this show for 13 years now and really what makes it successful is the community’s support year after year supporting their local makers. It really makes all the difference! And of course, the amazing talented vendors we have as well! When you put the two together, it makes for a community favorite event year-after-year!
“I believe the value of the event really has several factors that go into it. It not only provides a form of entertainment for the community, but it also helps fuel and support the local economy. It supports local handmade businesses, keeping the money earned locally reinvested in their own communities, supporting local charities which are within just a few miles of where the show is happening, and of course it also supports the general arts community. I think there is definitely something to be said about still going to an art/craft festival in this day in age when 99% of shopping is done online and on Amazon most of the time. It’s a true American pastime that many generations have loved doing, and I love watching it continue to evolve and grow. It’s also really special to support local and appreciate the craftsmanship and hours that goes into the work that these vendors produce. Each piece is truly made with love!”
