The Lorain Port and Finance Authority announced that the contained disposal facility (CDF) at the Mile-Long Pier site in Lorain will close to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 25, to conduct a targeted controlled burn of previously treated phragmite vegetation, according to a news release.

This controlled burn has received all necessary local, state and federal approvals and is being conducted by a professional firm which has supervised over 1,000 similar instances in the past 25 years, the release said.

This is a step in the phragmite mitigation process and will remove the standing dead material, according to the release.

This will stimulate native plant growth and improve the habitat, the release said.

The next phase will involve seeding the contained disposal facility with native plants, according to the release.

“The Mile-Long Pier and other areas will remain open to the public during this time as the burn will be in the red areas within the construction site,” the release said. “Weather and wind will dictate the burn, so it could be postponed if the winds are not correct.”
