Robbie Fletcher named as new Kentucky education commissioner – All about Money

Robbie Fletcher named as new Kentucky education commissioner

Lawrence County Schools Superintendent Robbie Fletcher has been selected to become the next Commissioner of Education, according to a release from the Kentucky Board of Education.

Fletcher, who has led Lawrence County since 2014, will start his term on July 1 if confirmed by the Kentucky Senate, according to the release. The position is currently filled in an interim capacity by Robin Fields Kinney, who stepped in after Jason Glass left the position in September.

“It was evident in the interview process that each person on the board has a profound love for every child in the Commonwealth,” Fletcher said. “If confirmed, I will be honored to serve all of Kentucky’s kids and all those involved in our kids’ educational experiences alongside each Board member.

Two other candidates, Buddy Berry and Jim Flynn, were also in consideration for the position.

Among his duties, the commissioner oversees approximately 635,000 students in 171 districts across the state.

“We sought a leader who embodies the qualities of an ambassador and statesperson, an expert instructional leader, a strong organizational leader and a visionary innovator,” Kentucky Board of Education Chair Sharon Porter Robinson said. “We are confident that Dr. Fletcher meets these requirements and are excited about the future of education in the Commonwealth under his leadership.”
