JEFFERSON — The Ashtabula County Building Department has a variety of different forms and informational items to help any home improvement projects county residents may be considering.

The site, located at ashtabulacounty.us/181/Building, includes a list of the zoning contacts from cities, villages and townships around the county.

The site also includes a list of steps required to obtain a permit, which consists of first reaching out to local zoning officials for the project, contacting the health department if the project includes plumbing aspects, providing a copy of zoning and, if necessary, plumbing approvals to the building department. Permit applications for residential projects can be submitted in paper at the office.

Plans will go through a review process, which can take up to 30 days, according to the website. After plans are reviewed, applicants will be notified of the status.

The website also has information on how to schedule inspections.

Inspections take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are typically scheduled the day after the request is made, according to the website. Anyone calling to schedule an inspection will need to have a permit number or address, the type of inspection they are requesting, the date of the required inspection, the name and phone number of an on-site contact, verification that up-to-date approved construction documents will be available during the inspection and any special information that might be relevant.

Inspections are required before pouring concrete into footings, at various points during foundation work depending on the point of the foundation, plumbing rough and rough inspections, fire resistance.
