AHN launching $1 billion investments

Highmark Health and Allegheny Health Network are investing $1 billion to transform the campus of Allegheny General Hospital. The investment includes new facilities and upgraded services. That work will begin in the emergency room. It will be expanded and then attached to a tower just next door.”We still have to see patients as we build, so this will be done in a multi-phase approach,” the president of Allegheny General Hospital, Dr. Imran Qadeer, said. The first change patients will notice is an expansion of the emergency department where you enter Allegheny General Hospital’s ER now. According to Qadeer, the expansion will reach the current helipad, which will be moved to add what AGH officials say will be the centerpiece of campus: the cardiovascular tower, which will have 100 private beds and provide cardiac care, including transplantation.”A number of these programs will allow us to have excellent quality of care as well as improve patient experience,” Qadeer said. These expansions are in addition to the creation of the new neuroscience institute already underway at the former cancer institute at Hemlock and James streets. AHN officials say AGH will also transition to all private inpatient rooms, upgrades in their lobbies and a new medical office building. It’s a big project at a big price — an investment Qadeer says is necessary for patient care.”AGH is vital to the community and viability of the community as well,” he said. “Having that investment done in the community will ensure that we’re aligned with the city of Pittsburgh as well as the community to continue to provide leading academic services, not only just in the community, but as well as the greater Pittsburgh region and beyond.”The work is expected to begin here next year and be complete in five years.
