Daughter Donates Telescope To School, Sparks Scientific Exploration In Students

In a touching tale of compassion and generosity, a daughter fulfilled her mother’s final wish by donating the last of her mother’s money to the school she had once attended. This selfless act not only honored her mother’s memory but also contributed to the improvement of the school and the community at large.

Six years after her passing in 2019, her daughter, Sutapa Chakrabarty, honored this wish by donating her mother’s last deposit of Rs 25,000 to the school on the fifth anniversary of her death, March 27.

With this donation, the school was able to purchase a telescope for its students.

Headmistress Sarbani Sen shared, speaking to TOI, “We were planning to buy a telescope to set up an astro-club to encourage our students to learn astronomy as we find that many have an inclination towards studying these things. We didn’t have enough funds to purchase the telescope. When we were planning to raise money from teachers, her daughter came to the school and donated her mother’s last deposit. Surprisingly, the amount she donated was exactly what we needed for the telescope.”

Students experience telescope for the first time

Sutapa Chakrabarty explained, “My mother used to say that school has given a lot to her. In return, she wanted to do something for the betterment of the school. This year, the school is observing its 75th anniversary so I felt it is the right time to fulfil my mother’s wish.”

She expressed her only regret was that her mother couldn’t witness this moment during her lifetime.

This week, the school inaugurated its astro-club, where students stayed back after classes to observe the setting sun and rising moon through the telescope.
