FedEx leverages advanced technology to make smarter and more sustainable supply chains
In a recent conversation with ET-Edge Insights, Kami Viswanathan, President of FedEx for the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa, provided a deep dive into how FedEx is leveraging AI, machine learning, and data analytics to drive transformative changes in the logistics sector.
Viswanathan highlighted the critical role of data and AI in managing time-sensitive shipments, a critical advantage especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. FedEx, leveraging advanced technologies such as the proprietary SenseAware®, has enhanced the safe and efficient delivery of essential goods, including vaccines, through real-time monitoring and AI-powered systems. FedEx also launched FedEx Surround, a platform that utilizes AI and predictive analytics to monitor shipments and environmental conditions, such as weather, crucial for preserving goods. This integration of advanced technologies helps the company to prevent pre-empt delays, ensure timely delivery, and offer customers greater control over their delivery preferences, particularly in the thriving e-commerce sector.
Emphasizing how leveraging technology in supply chains can enhance sustainability by facilitating the transition to greener practices, Viswanathan spoke about FedEx® Sustainability Insights. This tool allows customers to track their carbon emissions within the FedEx network in near real-time and to use the information from emissions reports to make more strategic and sustainable decisions in line with their own goals. This innovative approach not only empowers customers to make environmentally conscious choices but also contributes to building sustainable supply chains across the industry.
Furthermore, through the FedEx Innovation Lab (FIL), FedEx is shaping the future by investing in digital startups. A notable collaboration with Mad Street Den has yielded an improved KYC submission process to streamline the digital experience for FedEx customers. The experience is powered by their Intelligent Document Processing solution, an offering from their orchestration platform. This initiative is part of FedEx’s broader strategy to reduce manual KYC audits and expedite clearance times, underpinning the company’s commitment to digital excellence and customer-centricity.
Viswanathan stressed the collective nature of sustainability efforts and pointed out that advancements in AI and data analytics are playing a key role in making supply chains smarter, thereby influencing the broader supply chain ecosystem. This increased intelligence not only enhances operational efficiency but also creates opportunities for e-commerce players to expand their businesses. By leveraging technology-driven insights, companies can optimise routes, reduce costs, and improve overall customer experiences, driving growth and competitiveness in the digital era.
Viswanathan’s perspective underscores the ongoing FedEx commitment toward innovation, sustainability, and customer-centricity. As technology continues to evolve, companies like FedEx are poised to lead the way in shaping the future of logistics, delivering value to customers while contributing to a more sustainable and efficient global supply chain.
